Introduction to Reading, Shading, and Writing Fractions

Daily Review:

As a whole class warm-up, students will review the concept of counting objects within a WHOLE picture.  Using the Inspiration activity titled, How Many Pieces in the Puzzle?, students will review the concept of parts of a whole piece.  We will go through all twelve questions, answering them together.

Statement of Objectives:  (GA QCCS)

Grade: 2

Mathematics - Number Sense & Numeration; Fractions & Decimals

Topic: Fractions
Standard: Relates fractions (halves, thirds, fourths, 1/6, 1/8, 1/10) to concrete and pictorial models and relates models to fractions.

Presentation of Information:

Explain that, today we are going to learn about turning these PARTS of the WHOLE into fractions.  Give a few examples, looking back at the daily review activity, How Many Pieces in the Puzzle?, and turning each item into a fraction.  For example, #5 would be ¾.  (There are THREE blue pieces out of FOUR total.)

Guided Practice:

1.  Students will each receive a mini-bag of M&Ms.  They will be reminded (frequently) NOT to eat any until after this activity is complete.  Students will count the total number of M&Ms in their bag.  Then, they must count the total number of M&Ms for each color (red, blue, green, brown, yellow, and orange), and fill in the worksheet (html or Word), accompanying the M&M bags.

Using the Kidspiration® worksheet titled, Introduction to Writing Fractions, students will work in groups on writing fractions, with teacher assistance and observation.  We will review as a whole class, answering any questions as we go.  This is the time in which any misunderstandings will be addressed and –hopefully- cleared up.

Independent Practice:

Now that students have a good grasp on the concept of fractions, students will complete a worksheet similar to the activities done in class.

Formative Evaluation:

Students will have a short quiz the next day to check for understanding.
