Ordering Numbers
from Greatest to Least |
|
Daily
Review: As a reminder,
we will look again at the number line, remembering that numbers closer to
zero are smaller than those further away. |
|
Statement
of Objectives: To review
the concept of greater and least. |
|
Presentation
of Information: Students
will use a variety of sources to learn this concept. We will utilize the overhead projector,
index cards, and a string with markers placed on it to represent the number
line, Inspiration software, and the classroom textbooks. |
|
Guided
Practice: In small groups
(2-3 students), we will look at the number line, and at a page in the text
book. Students will be given a set of
index cards with various numbers on it.
In their groups, students are to place the index cards in order from
smallest to largest, keeping in mind where the zero is on their number
line. After the teacher checks each
group’s work, students will be asked to remove the index cards, and place the
zero marker at the other end of the number line. Students will then place the index cards in
order from largest to smallest. Again,
work will be |
|
Independent
Practice: Next,
students will complete the Inspiration worksheet, Greatest to Least, in which they will
manipulate the numbers, arranging them in the correct order. The teacher will check individual
work. As an
extension of independent practice, students will take the string used in the
guided practice exercise, and after generating random numbers, they will
arrange them on the string, keeping in mind where zero is. |
|
Formative
Evaluation: To assess
student understanding, the class will play a game, in which each student
randomly draw seven numbers out of a hat, and must place them in order. This will be done on multiple occasions, in
order to practice the concept.
Additionally, more formal assessment will come at the end of chapter
test. |
